At Northeast Credit Union, we believe that good people doing great things is what makes communities strong, and stronger communities make the world better. Meet Chris Carragher, a super inspiring surfer dude from Portsmouth, whose passion for paddleboarding turned into a club, where members don’t just have fun, they raise money for local charities. Talk about loving your community and giving back!
It began in 2013, when he took his niece out on a paddleboard, which looked a little boring to this life-long surfer. To keep things interesting, he gave himself a goal of paddling out to the Isle of Shoals (IOS) by the end of summer (a difficult and challenging goal, to say the least). After months of preparation, his first grueling 16- mile paddle to and from IOS took five hours and was not exactly a day at the beach, but Chris not only made it, he turned into a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire (BBBSNH). Pretty soon, other paddleboarders were interested and excited by what Chris had accomplished and wanted to do the same, which is how Seacoast Paddleboard Club was born, and how the club has raised more than $70,000 for BBBSNH in just five years!
The Club’s mission is to get people out on the water, to have fun and give back when they can. Now 75+ members, Chris organizes beach clean ups, Community paddles, Sunday paddles, and a Halloween paddle fundraiser that supports the Portsmouth Halloween parade (Boo!).
The Club’s latest fundraiser was this year’s, Seacoast Paddle for the Pups, with funds going to the New Hampshire SPCA.
Having lost his beloved chocolate lab Stella, who he and his wife adopted from the New Hampshire SPCA in 2006, they wanted to give something back to the organization. So, dogs and entrants hit their boards and raised more than $4,000, in this, the fundraiser’s first year.
This is community involvement at its best. Chris has created a way for people to make life-long friendships, exercise, and help good and worthy causes, too. Chris says giving back has always been part of his life. His energy and enthusiasm has inspired a whole community to be better and do better. When we love our community, we encourage others to do the same.
